Normally I’m so busy sorting and listing that paying attention to sudden fluctuations in price is hard. One of the smaller joys as a online card shop owner is reading TCGPlayer’s blog, particularly the series on price spikes. Those help me keep an eye out for what’s popular with players and collectors.
Example: I sold two near-mint Pikachu & Zekrom GX the same day. And I thought Wow! That’s 80$ worth of cards going out the door! Except, oh no, I hadn’t caught the 3x to 4x price spike on the originals after the 30th Anniversary reprints were announced! Not to say I would have cancelled the orders and relisted them had I known. The lucky buyers got their deal fair and square. But if I had caught the announcement? My prices would have updated accordingly, and they would have sold for 140$ to 180$ apiece. Alas!
After reading this week’s post I got to digging through my box of pre-modern holos for Prism Star cards. Sun and Moon: Team Up has increasingly been a popular set because of all the tag team bangers inside. Consider these:
- Gengar & Mimikyu GX
- Magikarp & Wailord GX
- Latias & Latios GX (including the famous Love Birds card!)
- Eevee & Snorlax GX
While what I found, the two Tapu Koko cards, isn’t all that impressive compared to the other Prism Star cards, both of them were near-mint. If you want either copy, check out my shop on TCGPlayer!
PS: SortSwift just added a new tracker for spikes up and down. Like most of the features, it’s in beta right now. But you know what? Having the tool and checking it more than once a week will give me a better idea of market movements. Nice!
